Restoration of degraded lands – Establishing ‘Living islands’

Tendril Foundation buys degraded land portions of 1-2 acres and restores forests. The restoration process uses by the Foundation has three phases: 1. Removing invasive plants; 2. Protecting naturally-grown native plants; and 3. Introducing lowland rainforest plants. The Tendril Foundation takes a community-oriented approach towards establishing ‘living islands’. Communities are invited to plant trees and the Foundation provides plants. Communities are also invited to bring native plants. Simultaneously, the Foundation educates communities regarding the importance and benefits of restoration and conservation. The programme was initiated in 2018 in Baddegama, Galle District, Sri Lanka and it is on-going.
