Tendril Foundation

Tendril Foundation is a nonprofit organization aiming at environmental and species conservation, forest and habitat restoration, and provision of sustainable livelihoods. It was initiated in 2017. Our major objectives are to,

  • Connect with communities, women and children to protect the environment
  • Restore forests and habitats in degraded lands
  • Conserve forests, species, habitats and ecosystems
  • Establish and network community-based organizations towards environmental protection and creation of sustainable livelihoods
  • Introduce organic products of the communities to local and international market;
  • Supporting children’s education through providing library facilities and other essential needs
  • Train and aware communities on conservation and sustainability
  • Introduce socially engaged art practices to communities
  • Encourage people’s participation in local policy processes
  • Engage in environmental research and surveys
  • Facilitate environmental researchers
  • Publish research findings

Research, surveys and proposals

Conducting environmental research

Tendril Foundation conducts environmental and policy research and surveys in various areas in Sri Lanka. The findings are presented in local and international conferences and published in journals.

Facilitating environmental researchers

Tendril Foundation facilitates environmental researchers from diverse fields. The restored forest lands have been used as research areas and biodiversity survey are encouraged in such areas.

Proposal to establish a wildlife corridor to connect the fragmented forest patches in Handapan Ella and Walan Kanda

After conducting a survey, Tendril Foundation developed a proposal to establish a wildlife corridor to connect the fragmented forest patches in Handapan Ella and Walan Kanda. This was presented to the Forest Department.

Awareness and training programmes

Conservation Volunteer Training Workshop - Panama

Tendril Foundation organized a Conservation Volunteer Training Workshop to train 40 conservation volunteers in Panama, Ampara District on 22 December 2018 Sri Lanka. The workshop covered both theoretical and practical sessions including conservation policies, biodiversity, forest and species conservation, and usage of technology for environmental conservation. Dr. Indi Akurugoda, Dr. Thissa Hemaratne, Mr. Samitha Somathilake, Mr. Chirath Jeewantha and Mrs. Kaushalya Dissanayake contributed as resource persons on behalf of the Tendril Foundation. Mr. Manjula Karunaratne has coordinated the event.

Training programme for government officials – Nuwara Eliya District Secretariat

This training programme aimed at educating the government officials on implementing policies and addressing problems related to environment. Mr. Manjula Karunaratne was the resource person in this programme. There was an overwhelming interest of the participant officials to know about policy contradictions occur when implementing environmental policies.
